Newington Spring League 2026
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the schedule?
Last year, we did:
Saturdays
- Half Ice Mite B @ 9:10 am
- Full Ice Mites - Squirt B @ 10:20 am and 11:30 am
- Squirt A @ 12:40 pm and 1:50 pm
- Pee wee B @ 3 pm and 4:10 pm
- Pee wee A @ 5:20 pm, 6:30 pm and 7:40 pm
Sundays
- Bantam A @ 10:20 am and 11:30 am
- Bantam AA @ 1:50 pm and 3 pm
If the majority of the team's roster cannot make a game slot (you will have the schedule ahead of time), we can change the slot - the league is a big scheduling project to make everything work - Kids have lacrosse, baseball, soccer as well, so we do our best to make everything work - Nothing will be perfect, but we will do our best

When are the spring hockey games?
Last year, we had Mites through Pee wees on Saturdays - Bantams on Sundays - if the majority of a team has a scheduling conflict, we will adjust - We had no problem with this last year
What would the birth year/age range requirements be for Spring League?
2019s through 2017s
Half Ice Mite B, Half Ice Mite A, Full Ice Mites - Squirt B, or Squirt A (the league is based more on level than age)
Mites can play full ice if they are at that level
2017s through 2015s
Full Ice Mite - Squirt B, Squirt A, Squirt AA - if moving up for 2026-2027, they can play Pee wees
2015s through 2013s
Pee wee B, Pee wee A, Pee wee AA - if moving up for 2026-2027, they can play Bantams (checking)
2013s through 2011s
Bantam B, Bantam A, Bantam AA - if moving up to Midgets for 2026-2027 (2011s), they can still play Bantams
Can a player play on multiple spring hockey teams? Or join other leagues? Or do other spring programs?
Yes
Will this interfere with soccer, baseball, lacrosse (other spring sports)?
Spring hockey is not a big time commitment - it's just once per week for 8 weeks - off for spring break - it is not expensive to play, it is good experience (especially if moving up), and fun for the kids to play with old friends, make new friends - we do our best to make sure the majority of your team's players can make the game time and date - we are also flexible with subs, and it's ok to miss a few games

Please text or call 908 216 8750 (cell) if interested in spring - summer hockey skills clinics - practices
What would the cost be for team entry, and would it still be 8 games?
Half Ice Mites - $1,500
Squirts - $2,100
Pee wees - $2,250
Bantams - $2,400
Early bird team pricing - subject to change - this is the option where you will supply your own coach, recruit your own team, and supply your own jerseys (or use your club team's jerseys)
Figure families will pay anywhere from $200 to $360 depending upon how many players are on a team, who is coaching, which spring program you signed up for, and whether or not the group wants to make jerseys or not - the added features of Crossbar have been added to the league fees
Everybody gets 8 total spring hockey games
This registration link will bring you to the team registration page - then you can start inviting your players to register for your team on Crossbar

How should we think about coaching (do you want us assigning a coach as we assemble the roster?)
Because we are going through USA Hockey - CHC this year, coaches need to be Safesport certified with background check completed, modules completed, but no seminar is needed
Would the kids need new USA hockey numbers or could they still use their numbers from winter season?
Everyone must have a USA Hockey # to be able to play - 2025 - 2026 USA Hockey #s are fine - this is your hockey player's excess accident insurance policy - more information on USA Hockey's excess accident insurance and other policies can be found on USA Hockey's website
Will you allow individual teams to form/enter like you did last year?
Yes - All teams registered will have their own Crossbar team group chat, availability feature, roster players can be invited and added by the team manager, integrated game schedule, etc - just like CHC club teams - this is a new added feature for 2026 - if you do not have a team yet, call or text 908 216 8750 (cell)
This registration link will bring you to the team registration page - then you can start inviting your players to Crossbar
Do you have USA Hockey certified referees?
Yes, all referees are USA hockey certified referees - for half ice mites, coaches can volunteer on ice as referees
Can I register multiple teams or siblings?
Yes
Are there playoffs?
Yes, the last couple weeks are "Playoff Weeks" - with the last week being the "Championship Week"
Everyone gets 8 spring hockey games total
How many kids minimum to create my own team?
Probably 6 players and a goalie for half ice mites - 8 players and a goalie for full ice mites & squirts, 9 players and a goalie for pee wees, 10 players and a goalie for bantams
Is there any merch I can buy?
Last year, we made hats for 2025 - we will do at least that again this year
Why does the price go up per age?
USA Hockey referee costs are higher as the age goes up
How can I help?
Spread our flyer, register a team, join a team, invite players - it costs nothing today to get everyone registered on Crossbar - everyone will be billed later in the new year
Do we need to pay today if we are still formulating our roster?
Nope, we will collect $ after the new year - today, just register your team on Crossbar, and start inviting players - this holds your team's spot, so the kids can start recruiting, and can start figuring out jerseys - if you are not interested in forming your own team, and would rather join a team, call or text 908 216 8750 (cell)
https://www.newingtonspringhockey.com/registration/52880
This is a bit too far in advance. Can we get a better sense of who wants more hockey in March?
Remember that current Fall - Winter teams were created and planned for in March - April of this past year - Simply register your spring hockey team on Crossbar, and you can start inviting and assigning roster spots - this helps everyone to plan
Does everyone get jerseys from the spring league?
It is the responsibility of each team to appoint a team manager, a USA Hockey certified coach, and to supply their own spring league jerseys - if you need a coach, we can help find one for you
If you are on comprehensive team like Eagles, or End to End Prospects, your program manager will be coordinating jerseys
Can we wear our current club team's jerseys?
Yes, as long as there is a number on the back, the rest of the team agrees to that, and the club is ok with it (your group will save jersey $ this way)
What are the goals of the spring league?
- To get the level right
- For the kids to have a great time
- To bring the spring hockey community together
- To make some new friends, and rekindle with old friends
- Additional hockey game experience (possibly at a new level or with different teammates, a different coach or different program)
- For everyone to come back next year
- For everyone to have a good experience
- For everyone to spread the word
When will this start?
Last week in March through June 2026
Are you off for spring break?
Yes
How many kids played last year?
Over 700 kids played in Newington Spring Hockey League 2025 - we hosted over 165 hockey games

Are the games able to be livestreamed?
Yes, all games last year were livestreamed on Black Bear TV
Is this like a hockey tournament? Do you host other hockey tournaments?
Newington Spring League is a like an 8 game hockey tournament - extended over 8 weekends
Is there overtime?
Last year, we did a first to score 3 v 3 OT for 3 minutes - stop time - was really fun - if tied after that, it's a tie
How long are the spring hockey games?
We have a one hour ice slot per hockey game (3 - 12 minute periods) (full ice)
If a goal differential is 6 or more, we will run clock
Half ice mites had 2 - 21 minute halves, with buzzer every 2 minutes to line change, run clock - with shootout at the end
What would be the max number of players?
Figure 15 players and 2 goalies for now for full ice - 10 players and a goalie for half ice - It's less about the max number of players though - more about how many kids are showing up (we need lots of subs for spring - sometimes people have other sports, vacation, etc) - There should never be more than 15 players (3 lines) with 2 goalies showing up for full ice (kids want playing time in spring) - they should all have the same uniform, with a number on the back - at some point in the spring season, we'll lock the rosters, so there is no sneaking kids in for playoff, and championship games, etc
Do you have recommendations for places to make custom spring hockey jerseys?
